Administrative support has been a consistent part of my work for more than a decade, beginning at Dallas Baptist University’s Writing Center. There, I created reusable email templates, organized communications, and used Microsoft Word and Access to collect and maintain program data. It was an early introduction to the kind of behind-the-scenes work I still enjoy today: creating order, maintaining accurate information, and making routine processes easier for other people to manage.

Retail management expanded that responsibility considerably. Running a store meant far more than supervising a sales floor; it required maintaining schedules, employee records, performance documentation, cash and deposit records, inventory paperwork, loss-prevention documentation, merchandising plans, operational checklists, and corporate reporting while keeping the business compliant with company policies and procedures. I was often balancing staffing shortages, customer issues, inventory needs, deadlines, sales goals, and administrative requirements simultaneously, which taught me to prioritize quickly without losing track of the details that keep an organization accountable and functioning.

At The Basement, the administrative complexity grew again. The Basement was one space within Creative Spaces & Services, a subdepartment of UTA Libraries within the University of Texas at Arlington, so my work had to function across several organizational levels at once. I managed confidential employee records, hiring and performance documentation, schedules, payroll and timesheet verification, purchasing, budgets, vendor coordination, room and resource use, faculty partnerships, academic programming, events, policies, SOPs, reporting, compliance requirements, and long-term planning while navigating departmental and university procedures.

Much of that work was completed independently or alongside only one other full-time staff member, with our responsibilities divided by area of focus. While my counterpart concentrated primarily on game development, technology, and recreational programming, I took primary responsibility for documentation, tabletop and analogue programming, and the educational side of the space. I built much of that infrastructure from the ground up, including the tabletop team, educational course integrations, training systems, service documentation, policies, and supporting administrative processes. Many of those programs and systems remain part of the space today.

That environment required constant strategic judgment as well as day-to-day administration. I regularly had hundreds of details moving at once across employees, courses, events, budgets, resources, deadlines, and institutional requirements. I developed systems that preserved organizational knowledge, collected data to demonstrate the space’s academic value, translated larger departmental goals into workable team-level processes, and continually refined documentation and training as the program grew. Much of the work was invisible when it went well, which is often the nature of strong administrative support: anticipating needs, maintaining compliance, protecting confidential information, and keeping countless moving pieces coordinated.

As an independent contractor, I have continued applying those skills in smaller organizations and client projects. At Trauma Therapy of Nashville, I supported confidential client and administrative processes while improving payroll and workflow systems through Google Workspace, automation, and AI-assisted tools. My current work includes reviewing and organizing publication materials for accuracy, accessibility, consistency, and usability. Across each setting, my approach remains the same: understand what people need, create structure around complicated work, and build practical systems that can be maintained long after the immediate problem is solved.
